Dallas employment lawyer Keith Clouse directs readers’ attention to a recent article regarding the federal minimum wage. Minimum wage is currently set at $7.25 per hour. President Barack Obama recently proposed raising the minimum wage to $9 per hour by 2015. He also proposed indexing the rate to inflation after 2015 and raising the minimum wage for tipped employees for the first time in about 20 years.

People are divided on this issue. Proponents argue that a slight increase to the minimum wage gives workers a living wage and boosts the economy by getting more money into circulation. Opponents argue that many minimum wage jobs are held by teenagers and that a minimum wage hike would not make much difference to a family’s income. Critics also argue that businesses would be hurt because they could not afford to pay higher wages on top of higher costs associated with health care and taxes.

Businesses also fall on both sides of the debate. Some support a higher minimum wage because it could lower employee turnover and increase productivity. Others believe they could not afford a wage hike.
