Volkswagen Golf is a Best Back-to-School Car, Says KBB.com

A host of worries plague parents purchasing vehicles for teens and students, from safety to initial price and cost of ownership. With these difficulties in mind, Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com has released a list of the 10 Best Back-to-School Cars of 2013, and the 2013 Volkswagen Golf has made the cut. The model impressed with its jaunty styling and practical features, and KBB.com editors noted admiringly that the Golf "looks like a student's car."

Each of the vehicles on the 10 Best Back-to-School Cars list is a 2013 model available for less than $20,000. Selection criteria included fuel economy and safety, as well as style, versatility and overall value of the models. The editors noted that drivers' dollars go far with modern vehicles sporting surprising amenities at low price points.

"The Volkswagen Golf is a favorite among younger drivers because it's such a fun car to take out on the road," said Jared Saunders, general manager of AutoFair Volkswagen, a VW dealership in New Hampshire. "This is definitely a vehicle that parents and students can both be happy with, with its reasonable price, sporty body style and excellent safety features."

The Golf delivers 33 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg in the city in the 2-door model equipped with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder gasoline engine. Drivers will appreciate the smooth ride, which owes a debt to the model's four-corner independent suspension in which each wheel is allowed to pivot individually, dampening the feel of irregularities in the road. An Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick for the 2013 model year, the VW Golf features six standard airbags with Side Curtain Protection and a crash-optimized front end that compresses on impact to protect its passengers.
