Trucks have been a particular bright spot in the already sunny outlook for automaker sales this summer, with pickup sales heading toward their highest in eight years. While some automakers may now be struggling to ensure that their truck offerings are turning the heads of pickup-craving buyers, Ram seems poised to take advantage of buying patterns as it unveils details of the 2014 Ram 1500, the EcoDiesel powertrain option of which will be the first diesel engine in its light-duty pickup truck segment. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is expected to be more fuel efficient than the current leader in the class: the gasoline-powered V6 Ram 1500, which returns 25 mpg on the highway.
In addition to returning best-in-class fuel economy, the Ram 1500's 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine will deliver 240 horsepower and lead its class with 420 pound-feet of torque. Drivers accustomed to V8 gasoline-powered engines won't be disappointed with the towing capacity, either, since the EcoDiesel will approach the capability of a larger engine, towing up to 9,200 pounds.
"This truck will be popular among today's drivers because it offers the best of both worlds. Its power and towing capacity compare favorably with V8 engines, while it is expected to best its V6 competition in fuel efficiency," said Jeff Burt, general manager of Landers McLarty Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, a Ram dealer in Bessemer, Ala. "For Alabama drivers who spend lots of time in their trucks, getting more miles per gallon is great for the wallet even years down the road. Owners of the Ram 1500 love the amenities they get with this truck, too, and I don't expect the 2014 to offer anything less than fantastic features."
The current Ram 1500 offers interior technology features like available Bluetooth wireless connectivity and an optional Uconnect Access infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touch screen. Combined with interior detailing like available leather, burled wood and high-gloss black finishes, the Ram 1500's cutting-edge tech contributed to the marque receiving the highest ranking of any non-luxury auto brand in a study by J.D. Power and Associates. The finding came out of the auto research firm's Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, which surveyed 83,000 vehicle owners and lessees. After 90 days of driving, participants evaluated their 2013-model-year vehicles on the basis of 77 design and performance attributes to find the most gratifying models to own.
