It has been 12 years since a new Jeep Cherokee has been on sale in showrooms, but that is all about to change. An all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee midsize SUV has started shipping from its Toledo, Ohio, assembly plant, bearing a futuristic and fuel-efficient design while still featuring the brand's signature capability.

With slim, slanted headlights and its seven-slot grille creased into a waterfall shape, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee represents a dramatic departure from the nameplate's past styling, favoring contoured surfaces over angular design. Meanwhile, a new nine-speed automatic transmission and the use of roughly 65 percent high-strength-steel content in the body help the new Cherokee increase its fuel economy by more than 45 percent compared to the outgoing Jeep Liberty. When equipped with its standard 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir2 four-cylinder engine, the SUV returns up to 31 mpg on the highway and boasts a nearly 500-mile range.

"Many modern buyers are seeking a more fuel-efficient ride that is also well rounded when it comes to style and versatility, and the new Jeep Cherokee fits the bill perfectly," said Richard Gill, owner of Brigham-Gill Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, a Natick, Massachusetts Jeep dealership. "Even with its focus on a new generation of drivers, the Jeep Cherokee will still get its owners wherever they need to go in any kind of New England weather."

Buyers of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee can choose from three optional four-wheel-drive systems, including Jeep Active Drive I with a one-speed power transfer unit (PTU), Jeep Active Drive II with a two-speed PTU and Jeep Active Drive Lock, which features a two-speed PTU and a locking rear differential. For dedicated off-road enthusiasts, the Trail Rated 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk comes with upgrades like a one-inch factory lift, skid plates, signature red tow hooks, and substantial departure and approach angles.

The 2014 Cherokee is also the first Jeep model available with a new 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which produces 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque while netting 28 mpg on the highway. That healthy output allows the Cherokee to achieve a class-leading V6 towing capability of 4,500 pounds. Despite the new Cherokee's rugged tendencies, drivers will enjoy a smooth ride, compliments of the new front independent suspension with MacPherson struts and a new rear independent multilink suspension.

"Buyers of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee will get a comfortable commuter that saves on gas during the week, as well as a weekend warrior that can still get you to the ski resorts during a storm," added Gill. "Wherever drivers are headed, they're going to stand out on the road with the Cherokee's sleek styling."
