Next Generation of Iconic Pony Car Offers New Means of Pleasing Fans

With the Ford Mustang set to reach its 50th anniversary in 2014, fans of the iconic pony car will be able to purchase an all-new model next fall. The sixth-generation 2015 Ford Mustang was unveiled in several locations around the world earlier this month, and while it maintains the nameplate's unmistakable silhouette and penchant for power, the new model does so with bolder styling cues, expanded engine options and more finesse in the turns.

For the 2015 model year, Ford has brought back a steeply sloping fastback that nods to the classic 1969 Mustang; however, the overall design lines are sleeker thanks to a dramatically tapering roof on the new generation. Similarly, the signature trapezoidal grille endures with its Mustang logo, but it projects a more menacing look when paired with the 2015 model's narrower headlights and lower, wider stance.

"The 2015 Ford Mustang is designed to honor the pony car's prolific past while unabashedly accelerating the model into the future," said John Crowley, general manager of AutoFair Ford, a New Hampshire Ford dealer in Manchester. "That message is not only conveyed in the modern interpretations of classic design features, but also in the new engine technology that allows Mustang drivers to get the same thrills while spending less at the gas pump."

Under the hood, a newly available 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder is expected to be the most fuel-efficient Mustang engine ever while punching well above its weight class with an estimated output of more than 305 horsepower. Upgraded versions of the outgoing model's standard 3.7-liter V6 and optional 5.0-liter V8 will round out the powerplant options, while a new front suspension and the first use of an independent rear suspension across the entire Mustang lineup should greatly enhance handling.

Buyers of the 2015 Ford Mustang will likely find that the interior offers the starkest reminder that this is not their father's pony car. Higher-quality materials, aviation-inspired instrumentation and a roomier cabin will combine with standard technologies like Intelligent Access with push-button start and SYNC hands-free phone calls and music streaming to improve comfort, convenience and safety.
