Audi S5's Supercharged V6 Continues Run on Ward's 10 Best Engines List

There have been many innovative powerplants on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list in the past five years, but only one has been on the list for that entire period: the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 in the Audi S5. In fact, Audi's revered engine was one of only two units to repeat on the 2014 list from the year before, joining Honda's 3.5-liter V6.

WardsAuto evaluated 44 powertrains in October and November for its 10 Best Engines list this year, considering return winners as well as new or significantly updated units. Editors also required that the test vehicles housing the engines be available for purchase by the first quarter of 2014 at a starting price of $60,000 or less. Lauded for the "brute strength" of its 333 horsepower, its "luscious" 325 pound-feet of torque and its overall refinement, the 3.0-liter TFSI V6 tested in the Audi S5 retained its spot on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list despite the recent influx of six-cylinders into the market.

"Many automakers have found ways to get V8-like power out of new V6 engines in recent years, but none have managed to create a unit that operates as smoothly and strongly as Audi's TFSI V6," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Audi of Nashua, an Audi dealer serving NH. "Though WardsAuto used the S5 as its test vehicle, the V6 engine is actually available in a range of other Audi models, so it's had a big impact on the brand's recent sales success."

Aside from the performance-focused Audi S4 and S5 variants, the 3.0-liter TFSI V6 engine can be found in the Audi A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7. Of those five regular production models, four saw year-over-year sales gains in November, helping Audi clinch its fourth straight year of record U.S. sales with a month still left to report in 2013. Year-to-date, the luxury automaker has moved more than 141,000 units in the United States, a 13 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
