BMW to Outfit Its Latest 3 Series and New 4 Series with M Performance

Though the BMW 3 Series Sedan was redesigned for the 2012 model year and the 3 Series Coupe was eventually transformed into the 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe, both of those new-generation models have yet to receive high-performance M variants. That will change in January at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, where the all-new 2015 BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe will make their public debuts before going on sale early next summer.

Sporting a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine, the 2015 BMW M3 and M4 will produce 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, improvements of 11 horsepower and an impressive 111 pound-feet over the 2013 BMW M3 Coupe that featured a heavier V8 powerplant. That massive output will allow the fifth-generation M models to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds when outfitted with the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission. Despite those advancements in performance, the new BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe are predicted by the automaker to be nearly 25 percent more fuel efficient than the fourth-generation M3 Coupe.

"The inline-six in the new M3 and M4 will be the smallest-capacity engine used by BMW's M performance division since the early 1990s, yet it'll also be the most powerful unit to ever grace a production-series M3," said Marshal Cabot, general manager of BMW of Peabody, a Greater Boston BMW dealer. "That mix of high performance and efficiency is basically a juiced-up version of the formula that has made the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series so popular at dealerships this year."

Last month, the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series combined to move 13,148 units in the United States for a 22 percent sales increase compared to November 2012. Through 11 months of 2013, sales of the 3 Series and 4 Series have risen by 16 percent year-over-year. That strong performance has helped put BMW in position to achieve another record sales year for the brand in the United States.
