With Detroit Debut, BMW 2 Series Joins Push for Younger Luxury Buyers

Entry-Level Sports Coupe Targets Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class

With the recent introductions of new entry-level luxury cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and redesigned 2015 Audi A3 sedan, BMW is on a mission to provide a more substantive offering to younger buyers with its all-new 2 Series Coupe. Following its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month, the 2014 BMW 2 Series Coupe will go on sale in March as a larger and better-equipped replacement for the outgoing BMW 1 Series Coupe.

Like the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and the 2015 Audi A3 sedan, the 2014 BMW 2 Series Coupe will be priced starting at less than $34,000, but it will pack in more standard horsepower than its competitors. The base BMW 228i Coupe will house a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower, outperforming the base CLA-Class by 32 horsepower and the base A3 sedan by 70 horsepower. Performance junkies will be able to opt for the top-trim BMW M235i Coupe, which churns out 320 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque through its M Performance 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder. Despite its impressive output, the BMW 2 Series Coupe is surprisingly efficient, returning up to 35 mpg on the highway in standard form thanks to fuel-saving measures like Air Curtains, an Auto Start/Stop function and a selectable ECO PRO driving mode.

"Unlike the CLA-Class and A3, the BMW 2 Series doesn't let on that it's an entry-level model when you look at the performance figures, the amount of standard features and the fact that it's equipped with sportier rear-wheel drive instead of front-wheel drive," said Marshal Cabot, general manager of BMW of Peabody, a Greater Boston BMW dealer. "BMW also recognizes that younger luxury buyers want their performance paired with fuel efficiency and in-car technology, and the 2 Series delivers on both fronts."

The 2014 BMW 2 Series Coupe will come standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, an iDrive Controller with a 6.5-inch flatscreen, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity and a USB port. Buyers will also be able upgrade to an optional navigation system featuring an 8.8-inch screen and Touch Controller. When it comes to safety, the 2 Series will be available with a range of driver-assistance technologies found on more expensive BMW models, including Adaptive Headlights, High Beam Assistant, Parking Assistant, Driving Assistant, a rearview camera and a cruise-control system with a braking function.
