Automaker Proves Most Affordable for Second Straight Year

Savvy car buyers know that finding a good value means exploring the costs involved after the initial purchase price. To guide those shoppers, Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com has released its 2014 5-Year Cost to Own Awards, which highlight the auto brands and vehicles that are the most affordable in the long term. For the second straight year, Mazda was named the top overall brand in the awards, thanks to a lineup that is fun to drive, fuel efficient and resistant to depreciation.

To determine its 5-Year Cost to Own Awards, KBB.com considered a number of ownership costs, including financing, insurance, fuel, state fees, repairs and scheduled maintenance. Of course, the original purchase price was also calculated with the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price, and projected depreciation was pulled from Kelley Blue Book residual-value analysis. After all of those expenses were totaled, Mazda had the lowest estimated five-year cost of ownership of any brand on average.

"Mazda's lineup offers a lot of quantifiable benefits, like its great fuel efficiency and resale value, but it's the things you can't measure that put the brand over the top in cost of ownership, especially its incredibly engaging driving dynamics that ensure each car is appealing for years to come," said Tom McGovern, general manager of Rosen Mazda Waukegan, a Chicagoland Mazda dealer. "In fact, Mazda has found ways to dramatically increase fuel efficiency in recent years while still offering that signature responsiveness on the road."

Encompassing the engine, transmission, body and chassis, Mazda's new SKYACTIV technologies incorporate lightweight materials and clever engineering to improve fuel economy while maintaining a smooth and safe ride. As the automaker's first vehicle to feature the full SKYACTIV suite, the Mazda CX-5 compact crossover nets up to 35 mpg on the highway, the most of any SUV in the United States. On the other hand, the Mazda3 compact and Mazda6 midsize sedan each received the complete SKYACTIV treatment for their 2014-model-year redesigns, allowing them to return up to 41 mpg and 40 mpg on the highway, respectively.
