New Package for XLT Models Offers the Style and Tech of Pricier Trims

For drivers who like the bold styling of the top-trim Ford Explorer Sport but would like to spend less on their SUV, a new appearance package for the more affordable Explorer XLT might just do the trick. The updated 2015 Ford Explorer will arrive at dealerships later this month offering a series of upgrades in the XLT appearance package, including the same Magnetic Metallic painted grille, 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with painted pockets, black body-side cladding and roof rack rails found on the Sport trim.

Inside the cabin, buyers who opt for the new XLT appearance package will enjoy heated leather-trimmed front seats with Miko suede inserts and contrast stitching, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and floor mats featuring unique badging. That sophisticated look will be complemented by advanced technology like the SYNC with MyFord Touch infotainment system, two 4.2-inch color LCD screens for the instrument cluster, an eight-inch color LCD touchscreen in the center stack, two USB outlets and an SD card reader.

"With its powerful-yet-efficient engines, its almost limitless versatility and its advanced in-car technology, the Explorer doesn't need much in the way of improvements, but Ford is making some of the SUV's most popular features more affordable for the 2015 model year," said Jim McGovern, general manager of Ford of Londonderry, a New Hampshire Ford dealer near Manchester. "Buyers who are drawn to the aggressive styling of the Explorer Sport but don't quite need the 365 horsepower of its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine will find that the new XLT appearance package suits them well."

Across all trims, the 2015 Ford Explorer will offer three new exterior colors, including Caribou Metallic, Magnetic Metallic and Bronze Fire Metallic Tinted Clearcoat. Meanwhile, the base model will don 18-inch aluminum wheels, and the Explorer Sport will come standard with a Class III trailer tow package. Ford hopes its 2015-model-year updates will further boost the Explorer's sales momentum, as the SUV saw its best May tally since 2005 last month. More than 20,300 Explorer models found new homes in the United States in May, a 21 percent increase compared to the same month last year.
