Ram Becomes First Truck Lineup to Fully Adopt SAE J2807 Tow Standards

Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 Will Comply for the 2015 Model Year

Released in 2008 by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the J2807 towing standards were created to place automakers on equal footing when it comes to reporting towing capacity for their vehicles. Even after revisions to the standards in 2010, though, vehicle manufacturers have been reluctant to step into the newly refereed ring. That could change following Ram Truck's recent announcement that it will become the first brand to adhere to SAE J2807 across its entire pickup-truck lineup, starting with the 2015 model year.

Without SAE J2807 standards in place, automakers are mostly free to test a vehicle's towing capacity as they please, so it is not surprising that tow ratings often end up lower than initially reported once the SAE's criteria is introduced. That was not the case, however, with the 2015 Ram 1500, Ram 2500 Heavy Duty and Ram 3500 Heavy Duty, which saw either no changes or improvements in their maximum towing capacities after adopting SAE J2807.

"By becoming the first to align with SAE J2807 across all three weight classes of pickup trucks, Ram is proving it doesn't have to hide behind biased testing or loose claims from its marketing department," said Brian Duval, general manager of Concord, New Hampshire Ram dealer Bob Mariano Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. "The SAE's standards prevent automakers from finagling a few hundred pounds of towing capacity in order to claim segment leadership, so Ram's impressive results will finally be able to speak for themselves."

According to SAE J2807 standards, both V6-equipped 2015 Ram 1500 models feature segment-leading towing capacities, with the gas-powered 3.6-liter Pentastar model rated at 7,600 pounds and the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel edition pulling 9,200 pounds. Among Ram Truck's heavy-duty offerings, the 2015 Ram 2500 outfitted with the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine boasts a best-in-class towing capacity of 17,970 pounds, while the same powerplant in the 2015 Ram 3500 enables a class-topping 30,000-pound tow rating.
