Morocco Elected Chair of UN General Assemblv Third Committee

Morocco, in the person of the kingdom's ambassador to the UN Omar Hilale, was unanimously elected, on Monday, June 15 , 2015 as chair of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly for its upcoming 70th session. 

Morocco's election, on behalf of Africa, as chair of the main body of the UN General Assembly is an international recognition of the bold reforms undertaken by HM King Mohammed VI in human rights and His personal commitment to African causes, according to observers at the United Nations.

Made up of all the 193 Member States of the United Nations, the General Assembly provides a forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the UN Charter. 

 It meets in regular session intensively from September to December each year, and thereafter as required.

As part of its mission  , the Committee discusses   the advancement of women, the protection of children, indigenous issues, the treatment of refugees, the promotion of fundamental freedoms through the elimination of racism and racial discrimination, and the promotion of the right to self- determination.  The Committee also addresses important social development questions such as issues related to youth, family, ageing, persons with disabilities, crime prevention, criminal justice, and drug control.
