DALLAS (August 19, 2015)—Soulman’s Bar-B-Que opened their 15th North Texas location with record-breaking crowds and some messy fun with leaders of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford community. As part of the family-friendly Grand Opening activities, the restaurant hosted a rib-eating contest where each participant picked a charity of their choice to receive a $1,000 donation from Soulman’s Bar-B-Que if they won.

Cleaning his plate of juicy, saucy ribs in record time, Hurst Councilman Henry Wilson – the winner – chose to donate to the Weekend Kids Ministry. Other contest participants included Coach Mike Glaze of L.D. Bell High School, Hurst Police Chief Steve Moore and Councilman Bob McLendon.

“We are thrilled to be part of the community here in Hurst,” said Soulman’s CEO, Brett Randle. “Soulman’s is committed to giving back to each of the communities we are blessed enough to be a part of. This was such a fun way for us to raise awareness and donate to the nonprofits that truly make an impact on local children’s well-being.”

Weekend Kids is a nonprofit ministry associated with Shady Oaks Baptist Church that provides meals to qualified children in the Hurst area. In the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District, 53.1 percent of the children live in economically disadvantaged families. The recipients are identified by school administrators, school nurses and the students’ teachers. A team of volunteers prepare bags that contain six meals: two breakfasts, two lunches and two dinners that the children can prepare by themselves. The food is taken to each of the participating schools each Thursday, and the children pick up their weekend meals on Friday.
