New ACS guidelines cause concerns about insurance coverage for mammograms.

ADDISON (Oct. 28, 2015) – Solis Mammography, is getting an influx of calls from women asking if their mammograms are covered by insurance in light of the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) new recommendations announced last week. Solis wants to reassure all women that insurance coverage has not immediately changed, and that its radiologists strongly recommend that women still begin getting an annual mammogram at 40 (unless high risk factors exist which might cause her to start earlier than 40.)

Solis Mammography, the nation’s largest independent provider of mammography services, has centers in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Phoenix, Columbus, Ohio, and Greensboro, N.C., markets.

“We want the public to know that currently, a standard 2D screening mammogram is covered at 100 percent by almost all healthcare plans,” says Connie Oliver, Solis VP of marketing and client relations. “Last week, the ACS recommended that women between the ages of 40-44 not get mammograms. This has confused many patients who worry these recommendations give insurance companies the right to deny payment for mammograms to women under 45.”

What the community needs to know about the out-of-pocket costs for mammograms, as it stands today:

  • A standard 2D screening mammogram is covered at 100 percent by almost all insurance plans.
  • 3D screening mammograms, also known as tomosynthesis, are 100 percent covered by Medicare and by select major insurance providers including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. Coverage by other providers vary by plan and policy. If a 3D mammogram is not covered, out-of-pocket costs at Solis Mammography range between $50 and $100.
  • As of today, the ACS announcement has not had any impact on mammography coverage by insurance providers. However, that risk does exist in the future if the public and the healthcare community do not speak out. Solis Mammography does everything it can to ensure the insurance landscape does not create an unfavorable financial hardship for women who proactively want to take ownership of their health.

If there are other specific coverage questions, Solis recommends that women call their health insurance provider. Or, Solis representatives are always available for questions at 866.717.2551.
