After several years of sales gains, powerboats – such as the hundreds shown at the upcoming DFW Winter Boat Expo Feb. 5 through 14 – are as popular as ever. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) is predicting that new powerboat unit sales will be at pre-recession levels as early as this year.
“A steadily improving economy and flurry of product innovation have boosted new powerboat sales, which is encouraging to see as we head into the winter boat show season, one of the busiest selling periods of the year,” NMMA President Thom Dammrich said in a statement. “We anticipate 6 to 8 percent growth in 2016, which would take total new powerboat sales back to pre-recession levels of 250,000 units.”
Bron Beal, executive director of DFW Boat Expo, agrees that increased sales in powerboat and other segments, including the larger boats, has helped the boating industry overall and here in Dallas-Fort Worth. “We expect this season to be one of our busiest, and that means more jobs locally and nationwide. Each boat sold means higher employment. When you multiply those sales, it has a tangible lift in the industry.”
Dammrich adds, “Smaller, entry-level boats were the first to return post-recession, so it’s encouraging to see sales up across nearly all boat categories as we look to the winter boat show selling season and year ahead.”
Beginning Feb. 5, the DFW Winter Boat Expo at Dallas Market Hall will have over 650 all new 2016 boat and watercraft models on display and available for purchase from over 20 North Texas boat dealers.
