MOSHI, TANZANIA – Sustainable tourism isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a reality for Zara Tours and Zara Charity Founder Zainab Ansell. She’s been welcoming tourists since 1986 to her beautiful hometown of Moshi. And her love is evident.

Her love is shown in ecotourism that invites tourists to clean Mount Kilimanjaro twice a year - before and after the busy seasons. It is shown in planting trees, cleaning trash from the Indian Ocean, and educating and supplying porters for success personally and professionally. In fact, a portion of all proceeds from every traveler goes back into the community through Zara Charity’s efforts. Past and current projects include installing solar in schools, funding buildings, supporting vocational efforts of Maasai women, installing feminine hygiene dispensing machines in schools, and overall furthering educational efforts for Tanzania residents.

Today’s tourist wants not only to have an amazing adventure, but they also want to have genuine and meaningful experiences that blend culture, learning, customized itineraries, and a positive global impact. Tourists are invited to volunteer, donate, or simply travel with Zara Tours, knowing in doing so, they are making a valuable contribution.

Start watching for more ecotourism and sustainable tourism efforts as more Millennials travel, with or without family, looking for rich experiences. Travel already makes people feel good - and with ecotourism, when done well, both the locals and the tourists can have a mutually beneficial experience for decades to come.
