Maintaining strong relationships with the ones we love is an important part of life, and our partners are often central to that experience. For seniors, a strong bond with others can also significantly help overcome feelings of anxiety, sadness, or frustration. If you’re hoping to fall in love again with a spouse or spark up a new acquaintance, here are six ways senior couples are staying connected:

1. Explore Forgotten Hobbies

Was there activity of your youth that you’ve long-stopped participating in? Our interests make us unique and sharing them is a great way to form lasting bonds with others. Whether it’s painting, sewing, singing, or anything in-between, find time to rekindle your love of these outside activities and let your partner in on the experience. You might be surprised what new things you’ll find in common!

2. Dine with Style

A simple dinner date is one of the best ways to foster conversation and connection. Don’t be afraid of getting dressed up, trying a different hairstyle, or purchasing a new outfit for a night out on the town. Your partner will be impressed, and you’ll be feeling your best! Food often has the ability to remind us of old memories, people or places, and can be a great opportunity to take a stroll down memory lane. If going out to a restaurant isn’t an option, consider staging a small candle-lit dinner at home. If you’re not keen on cooking, food delivery apps like DoorDash, UberEats, and Postmates make it easy to order cuisines from your favorite restaurants.

3. Stay-Cation in Your City

It’s easy to get tired of your neighborhood when you’ve lived there a long time. Planning a “stay-cation,” or a getaway (without actually going too far) can be a great solution to reconnect and fall in love all over again. Consider booking a hotel room and sight-seeing in the city, exploring monuments, museums, shops, and scenery. If you’re looking for inexpensive activity options, make sure to check your local community calendars and newspapers for free events near you.

4. Find Joint-Care Living Plans

If you and your loved one require separate degrees of care as you age, there are plenty of options for couple-friendly assisted living. Senior communities often offer flexible options for couples to ensure that you’re not missing any time apart and still receiving the healthcare support you need. Many facilities will perform an assessment ahead of time to help you understand the best options available for you and your partner. Sharing your day-to-day routines with others as you age is a great way to maintain a strong bond and relationship.

5. Take a Class

When was the last time you learned something new? Many organizations offer group or couple classes to develop a variety of skills from pottery to cooking and gardening. Getting out of our comfort zone can be difficult, but when we have the support of a partner, it doesn’t feel as intimidating. You’ll likely get a good laugh out of learning a new activity--don’t expect to be perfect but enjoy the experience as a couple!

6. Host a Movie Night

Especially in light of the Covid-19 global pandemic, many movie theaters are closing their doors or have limited hours that may be difficult to accommodate in your schedule. One of the greatest benefits of hosting a movie night at home is you get to pick the feature film! Whether it’s a classic throwback or a new flick, set the stage with popcorn, cozy blankets, and a couch to sit and have a good time. This is a great activity that can be shared with couples, friends, or new acquaintances. Everyone loves a good adventure on-screen!
