Forest Lawn Trailer Park's water source remains under a ‘do not use’ notice due to elevated levels of manganese.
Residents of Forest Lawn Trailer Park are under a ‘do not use’ notice as of Oct. 14, 2020. According to Northern Health, the order was issued over a treatment malfunction and concerns about bacterial contamination.
Roughly 150 people live in the park, with residents notifying Alaska Highway News that the issue has been ongoing for the past ten months.
Elevated manganese levels were found beyond the Maximum Acceptable Concentration in the Guidelines for Canadian Water Quality. Levels would only be further concentrated by boiling the water.
Northern Health Spokesperson Eryn Collins says upgrades are needed to remedy the issue.
“Both issues with the system require infrastructure improvements to be completed by the water system operator,” wrote Collins. “Unfortunately, I’ve not yet been able to get an update as to the status of that remediation work.”
An alternate source of potable water has been made available to residents and is recommended for consumption use such as drinking, food preparation, washing fruits and vegetables, ice making, preparing infant formula, and teeth brushing.
