HORNELL, NY (WENY) - Residents in the city of Hornell have experienced discoloring of tap water this past month. The water has been deemed clean by health officials, although it’s not recommended for consumption.
Hornell Mayor John Buckley mapped out a clear explanation why the yellow water is showing up in residents’ sinks.
“We’re in the midst of a $6 million project at the water filtration plant,” Buckley stated. “Part of that project is to build two new holding tanks. In doing so, when there's that change from old to new, the construction piece of that project, that got in the way of the flushing. So, flushing we usually do twice a year, but because of the construction of the new tanks and the additional infrastructure that was going on to upgrade our systems, that disrupted the flushing component.”
The construction of the plant caused the discoloring of tap water in Hornell. Chief Operator of the Hornell Water Plant, Leonard Fucci, expanded on Buckley explanation.
“Due to the construction, we made the decision to not flush during those periods because we were destructing and constructing storage tanks,” Fucci said. “We didn’t know if we would have enough storage or not to waste that much water.”
Without the tanks, the Hornell water plant missed out on two yearly flushes. These flushes eliminate iron and manganese, which heavily influence the water color. Fucci continued with how missing out on the treatment played into the discoloring.
