Neighborhood in south Redding sharing concerns about brown water issues - KRCRTV.COM

REDDING, Calif. — People living in the Silver Creek neighborhood in south Redding said they've been dealing with brown water. KRCR spoke to one neighbor who said he and his wife first noticed the issue when they first moved into the neighborhood five years ago.

He said when they run their bath, the water appears brown.

James Gibson of Redding explained the water quality tends to get worse for them in the summer months. Other neighbors are dealing with the same or a worse situation and have been for the last few years.

Gibson told KRCR some of his neighbors have bought their own filters trying to mitigate the situation.

"Every morning, you almost have to run a tub and a half to two tubs of water to get clean water to bathe in. I'm not sure what causes it to settle there, or whatever, but that's what happens here," he said. "Every day in some way or another, either it's really really bad or it's marginal so you don't have to use as much water to flush your system out."

KRCR reached to the City of Redding to find out what they are doing to help bring back the clear water for these neighbors and also if the water is a health hazard.

They explained they flushed out the lines in the neighborhood Tuesday.

"A lot of times there's different minerals; naturally occurring minerals like iron and manganese, and the manganese is usually what causes the brown or the reddish-brown water," Water Utility Manager Josh Watkins said. "Because we're in the drought and we've had surface water...
