A DAY after Minister of Finance Situmbeko Musokotwane outlined the new dawn administration’s strategy for reviving the economy, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe has also given Government’s strategy regarding the goose that lays the golden egg for the country – mining. While Government’s stand regarding Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) was not explicitly stated, there is no mistaking Government’s position on the two mining firms – they have been mishandled. But it is not just KCM and Mopani; there is also gold mining, manganese, emeralds and other base metals. “The confusions associated with gold where illegal mining was the order of the day will not be tolerated under the new dawn government,” Mr Kabuswe told Parliament in a ministerial statement on Government’s position and strategy for the mining sector. “In addition, the wanton illegal mining and destruction of the environment in other base metals, industrial and energy minerals will be a thing of the past. “The illegalities in manganese mining, smuggling of emeralds and destruction of the environment by
