South32 Ltd. said it produced more aluminum, manganese ore and steelmaking coal in its first fiscal quarter versus the quarter immediately prior, but less nickel, energy coal and alumina.
The Australia-based mining company reported a 1% quarter-on-quarter lift in aluminum production for the three months through September, to 248,000 metric tons. It cited increased production at the Mozal Aluminium smelter where productivity benefited from a new energy efficiency technology.
South32 said manganese ore production was up 7% quarter-on-quarter, at nearly 1.6 million tons. The company reported a quarterly record at its South Africa manganese operations and said it has had "a strong start to the year" at its manganese operations in Australia.
However, the miner said production of base metals including nickel was weaker after the Cerro Matoso mine was disrupted by a temporary equipment outage, while it mined lower-grade material at its Cannington operation. Nickel output was down 12% quarter-on-quarter, at 9,600 tons.
