The Knox Board of Works members asked for more time to research an upcoming needed project at the Knox Water Department to fix media and the manganese levels in the water.
Water Superintendent Tim Lindewald has explained in prior meetings that the media, or filtering material, needs to be replaced. Media is made up of several layers of gravel, sand, green sand, and anthracite.
During Wednesday morning’s meeting, he stressed that it is becoming a high priority to get the project done and to regulate the manganese levels in the water as several residents have complained about the quality of water and the hardness of the water.
Lindewald presented two quotes from Peerless Midwest and Saxton which gave an outline of what type of materials are needed, but Mayor Dennis Estok noted that specific amounts of materials were not included in the quotes. He commented that he has several questions about the quotes and board members Jim Collins and Steve Dodge also have questions for the contractors.
Lindewald agreed to have representatives from Peerless, who have done work for the city on prior occasions, to meet with the members in a work session next week to answer questions and to get more information about the operations at the water plant. Collins and Dodge said they took a tour of the water plant and were educated more on the process, but need more information before making an informed decision on a quote.
