Town hopes to bring well back after PFAS treatment - The Local Ne.ws

IPSWICH — A “forever chemical” that shut down one of the town’s drinking water wells can be removed after treatment, the select board was told.

In an update to the board on Monday, town manager Tony Marino said federal grants will be used to get well water to the treatment plant before it is added to the town’s supply.

Brown’s Well, located near the corner of High Street and Mitchell Road, is one of five wells in town.

Water samples last December showed PFAS levels above 10 parts per trillion (ppt) in the water. The levels are still below the state limits of 20 ppt, the water department said.

Brown’s Well showed levels reaching 17.7 ppt in December 2020. A reading of 23.3 ppt in April 2021 lead to the well’s closure until the sample was deemed invalid by the state a few days later. Readings have since returned to a range of 16.4 to 17.6 early this year, the water department said.

“Although some levels of PFAS were detected in our water sources, all test results were compliant with the state regulations,” it added.

Readings in the other wells ranged from 0 to 9 ppt over the same period. Marino speculated that Brown’s Well is more susceptible to contamination since it is in a busy area.
