Pakistan’s Supreme Court in a surprise move on Wednesday questioned Prime Minister Imran Khan about his pace with the Pakistani Taliban, the armed group behind the 2014 attack on an army-run school that killed nearly 150 people, most of them students.
The judges questioned Prime Minister Imran Khan, summoned by the Supreme Court, on short notice, two days after the government announced a one-month ceasefire with the Pakistani Taliban, a group separate from the Afghan Taliban.
Khan faced criticism for holding talks with the Taliban, who agreed to a ceasefire until December 9. Both parties to the agreement claimed that the Taliban government in Afghanistan negotiated the deal in hopes of securing the pace in Pakistan.
The conclusion of the truce comes before the seventh anniversary of the attack on the school, claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, which killed 147 people, including 132 students.
The truce angered many Pakistanis against the talks pace with the militants.
On Wednesday, the judges asked Khan if we were “bringing them (the Pakistani Taliban) back to the negotiating table instead of taking action against them,” Pakistani daily Dawn reported.
The newspaper added that the judges asked Khan: “You are in power. The government is with you too. What did you do? You brought the culprits to the negotiating table,” referring to the attack on the school.
For his part, Khan promised to take action against the negligent accused, who caused the attack, after a new investigation....
