MI6 chief Moore seeking tech industry to counter intelligence threats - The National

Spymaster says agency must work collaboratively to tackle threat from hostile states, criminals and terrorists
Commanding advanced technology will be crucial in the struggle for domination between world powers, the head of MI6 has said.
In a rare public interview Richard Moore suggested that those countries who have the most advanced smart technology would dominate world affairs.
The Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service argued that Britain had to quickly security clear companies otherwise they risked receiving cutting-edge technology “18 months out of date”.
Speaking to the BBC ahead of a keynote speech in London on Tuesday, Mr Moore, 58, was questioned across a broad range of issues including Afghanistan, China, Russia and AI.
While Western powers still have advantages, he warned that China was using its economic and technological power to wield influence.
“I think that, in the contest for influence and power through the 21st century, those who command the key technologies will have an advantage.”
Western countries were faced with technological threats from countries such as China, who hacked other peoples’ advances and therefore the UK foreign intelligence service had to “stay ahead of that curve” by collaborating with outsiders.
“We have traditionally done an awful lot in-house but increasingly we are going to have to work with the tech sector to be able to tap into their extraordinary abilities,” he told the BBC’s Today programme. “In order to do that, we are going...
