CHENNAI: The state government has passed an order making a Tamil qualifying exam mandatory for all government jobs in Tamil Nadu.
Hitherto, even candidates who don't know the language can get placed in government jobs. They should clear a Class X-level Tamil test within two years of entering service.
"The Tamil qualifying exam is mandatory for all recruitment exams conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. Candidates must get a minimum of 40% marks to qualify in the Class X-level exam. TNPSC will not evaluate the answer sheets of other subjects if the candidates do not qualify in the Tamil exam," said human resource management secretary Mythili K Rajendran in an order, which comes into effect immediately, on Wednesday.
For exams conducted by the Teachers Recruitment Board, the Medical Services Recruitment Board, the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, and the Tamil Nadu Forest Uniformed Services Recruitment Committee, separate orders on Tamil exam will be issued.
For Group I, II and IIA posts, the qualifying exam will be conducted along with main written exam. The descriptive-type paper will test the ability of candidates in translation, understanding meaning of words, letter writing, and essay writing. Candidates must score 40 out of 100 marks to pass the test. For group III and IV posts in state services that have single-stage examination, general Tamil will be made mandatory and general English option will be removed.
