LYONS, Neb. -- Contrary to what the City of Lyons in northeast Nebraska has previously published, the discolored water in Lyons is not safe to drink. They have notified the community with a Facebook post and on their webpage.

Manganese is an essential nutrient when ingested in small doses. But, because of how much manganese is leaking into Lyons' city water due to broken valves and shipping delays, the Lyons water can cause adverse health effects, which can vary based on the health and age of the individual. For this reason, the State of Nebraska, Lyons city water management, and NDEE ask that people do not ingest the discolored water.

NDEE does not have the authority to make the city of Lyons reimburse residents for the lack of access to clean drinking water at this time, as manganese is not a regulated contaminant, and the water still passes the Safe Drinking Water Act.

The NDEE's Drinking Water and Groundwater administration tells NCN that normally, in this situation, the city of Lyons should have told the community of Lyons ahead of time about the change in water systems. However, the state also noted that this issue of broken valves was unforeseeable.

"Lyons has a good water operator," administrator Sue Dempsey noted. "We recommend they get that contractor out there ASAP when the new valves arrive."
