Indian state-run power company NTPC has awarded project involving a standalone fuel-cell based microgrid energy system that includes hydrogen production using an electrolyser in Andhra Pradesh on India's east coast.
This would be India's first green hydrogen-based energy storage project and a "precursor to large-scale hydrogen energy storage projects", the company said, without disclosing the recipient of the award. The project will be located at the NTPC Guest House in Simhadri, near Visakhapatnam.
"The hydrogen would be produced using the advanced 240kW solid oxide electrolyser by taking input power from the nearby floating solar project," NTPC said. "The hydrogen produced during sunshine hours would be stored at high pressure and would be electrified using a 50kW solid oxide fuel cell. The system would work in a standalone mode from 5pm to 7am."
NTPC has a target of achieving 60GW renewables capacity by 2032 and has commissioned a 10MW floating solar project at Vishakhapatnam.
The company's renewable energy subsidiary NTPC REL has signed an initial agreement with the union territory of Ladakh to set up the country's first green hydrogen mobility project in the region. NTPC also launched bids in July for a hydrogen fuelling station in Ladakh for hydrogen fuel-powered buses. The company floated a global expression of interest in August to set up a pilot project to blend hydrogen into India's city gas distribution network.
