Earlier this year, Namaste Care International in collaboration with Nursing Times launched a writing competition, Facing the end of life without fear, in memory of an innovative palliative care nurse. The 2021 Kimberley St John Essay Priz was open to essays by UK nurses that inspire people not to fear facing the end of life. The winner and runners-up were announced this month.
Kimberley St John’s death at the age of 32 in July 2020 came as a shock to her family, friends and colleagues.
A brilliant and passionate nurse, she was building a reputation both national and internationally for her trailblazing work in the field of palliative care.

Through her “Let’s Talk” campaign Kim sought to inspire people to talk about death and dying more openly, and without fear.
Kim saw life clearly – she loved people and put them first; she wasn’t interested in systems and jargon and she was good at putting things simply.
She was proud to be a nurse and, working to advance her speciality through both practice and research, was granted a prestigious Darzi Fellowship for aspiring clinical leaders, and had undertaken a Masters degree.
An advocate of the gentle, loving touch approach of Namaste Care, for people with advanced dementia, Kim took inspiration from around the world, travelling to the US to learn about Namaste Care from its creator, Professor Joyce Simard, and to see it in action.
