An Ait Seo – a celebration of Galway - Connacht Tribune Group

A new book of photography and bilingual poetry, An Áit Seo / This Place, has just been launched and a limited number of copies are being made available for free.

The publication reflects the beauty of Galway as documented by locals and visitors, according to Ruth Mulhern, Tourism Officer and the Creative Ireland team member in Galway County Council, who produced the book.

“We wanted to shine a light on as many areas of Galway as possible and weave poetry in both of our languages through carefully selected images,” she explains.

“The project was initiated early in 2020 just before we were hit by the seismic shift caused by the global pandemic,” Ruth adds. As a result, “chance and serendipity became as much part of the process as planning, in a time where being responsive and adaptive determined the success of any project”.

The creative team included poets Erin Fornhoff and Máire Holmes and photographer Matthew Thompson, who travelled across Galway, documenting people and the natural environment as well as the built heritage of the county’s towns and villages.

“In the process, they have captured an unmistakable spirit of rural Galway,” says Ruth. “A lot of thought went into the look and feel of the book and designer Bob Gray has ensured that words and images dance together across the pages.”

An Áit Seo / This Place has been launched ahead of Christmas and is meant as a ‘thank you’ to local people, says Ruth.
