Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Shaukat Tarin on Friday was sworn in as a senator after he was elected as senator on a vacant seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) earlier on Monday.
Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani administered the oath to Tarin as the Senate session resumed on Friday.
According to the details, Tarin bagged 87 votes, while four votes were rejected and five lawmakers did not partake in the elections.
It may be recalled that PTI’s Ayub Afridi had resigned from his seat in the Senate last month to pave way for finance chief’s election.
Shaukat Tarin will now get the finance ministry portfolio back after being elected as a senator.
On October 18, he was notified as Advisor to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue after his six-month constitutional tenure as the country’s finance minister expired on October 15 as talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington were almost concluding. He was appointed to the post earlier in April through an ordinance.
It is pertinent to mention here that the federal government will soon be presenting a mini-budget to the tune of Rs360 billion before the Parliament for the withdrawal of General Sales Tax (GST) exemptions in addition to imposing a fixed rate of 17 per cent tax on the import of essential consumable and industrial goods.
It was imperative for Tarin to get elected as a senator as only lawmakers can present the budget in Parliament.
