Karachi:
New Year’s Eve gunfire claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy and injured 18 others in Karachi, officials said on Saturday.
The boy, Reza, was hit by a stray bullet in Ajmer Nagri on Friday evening and succumbed to his injuries at Jinnah Hospital in Karachi, police said.
“Due to the aerial fire, another 18 people were admitted to hospitals with gunshot wounds,” an official said.
Police had previously warned of the shooting incidents on New Year’s Eve. The Pakistan Medical Association condemned the incident, calling on the government to completely ban aerial gunfire on all celebratory occasions.
Former Pakistani cricket captain Wasim Akram tweeted young people to stay away from such acts as “Rambo”, instead of behaving like civilized people.
