This is how they do it and what you can do to protect your website.

The main way keyword poachers steal your keywords is by using search engine optimization (SEO) tools.

Tools like Ahrefs and Shine Ranker, to name a few. These keyword platforms allow users to peek behind the curtain of your website, see what keywords you rank for, and steal them right under your nose.

Here’s how it works:

  1. They paste your URL into the site explorer feature of their favorite SEO tool.
  2. That feature gives them unprecedented access to the behind-the-scenes analytics of your website (it’s amazing what they can see).
  3. Then, they click on the organic keywords feature.
  4. Poof! Now they can see all of the keywords that you rank for on your website.
  5. By running a few filters, they can narrow down the keywords that you rank for that bring in the largest amount of search volume or monthly traffic.
  6. They can also filter for keyword difficulty. This means they can find the easiest keywords to steal from you.

Some of these tools even allow keyword poachers to easily make a list of your keywords with high volume and low competition.
