Google‘s new pitch-black dark mode has been rolling out to more users.
It made its dark theme available across all desktop and mobile devices last month, with the background initially a very dark grey.
But it has now switched to a true black, with the change being rolled out gradually.
How do I get Google dark mode?
To get Google’s dark mode on your device, click on the gear icon in the top right of the screen to access your settings, then go to “Theme”.
There, it should allow you to select light, dark, or a flexible option that adjusts to the time of day.
If your Google dark mode is still dark grey it means they new pitch-black update hasn’t been sent to your device yet, but it should be in due course.
Why has Google made the change?
OLED screens are becoming more and more popular, both on phones and laptops.
The true black background makes colours pop more, and makes text appear clearer.
Another major advantage for phones is that, with OLED screens, a true black background does not need to be lit, saving battery life.
Some users have found links have switched from blue to yellow on the new dark mode, again designed to make them appear clearer.
