Indian govt summons Wikipedia after cricketer Arshdeep Singh’s page shows Khalistan association - Economic Times

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has summoned Wikipedia executives in India seeking an explanation on how the Wikipedia page entry of Indian cricket team bowler Arshdeep Singh was changed to reflect Khalistan association, sources in the know of the matter told ET.
Khalistan refers to the demand for a separate sovereign state for the Sikh community and the movement is separatist and militant in nature.
A high-level panel, likely to be led by IT secretary Alkesh Kumar Sharma will meet Wikipedia executives during the day to question them on the checks and balances of edits being allowed on the knowledge-sharing website, and how modifications such as these could be allowed.
“It is a serious issue. The edits have been traced back to servers in the neighbouring countries and can cause serious damage to the internal peace and national safety of India. We will ask them (Wikipedia executives) how such an edit could be allowed to stay on for quite some time,” a senior government official told ET.
The Wikipedia page entry of Singh was changed after India’s five-wicket loss to Pakistan in the ongoing Asia cup on Sunday. The page entries, changed and subsequently restored, read that Singh had been selected to play for the ‘Khalistani national cricket team.
23-year-old Singh was criticised heavily on Twitter by fans of the Indian cricket team after he dropped a catch during a crucial stage in the game. Subsequently, his Wikipedia entry was also changed.
