AMRITSAR: A high-tech drone shot down by BSF near the international border in Amritsar on Monday may have been part of a recce by Pakistan before sending "kamikaze", or exploding drones, to target sensitive installations in Punjab, officials said. A second drone was shot down around 8.30pm near the Kalam Dogar border outpost in Amritsar sector.
Fears about the imminent deployment of a new weapon of destruction fuelled the debate over whether the BSF now needs to change its strategy to secure the country's skies along the border after more than 155 drone intrusions in the span of a year.
Sources in the BSF said worries over the number of intrusions by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from Pakistan had been exacerbated by the use of high-end equipment, including precision drone-mounted cameras.
The latest UAV shot down in Ranian village near Amritsar was a quadcopter weighing around 12 kg and packed with 2kg of contraband, suspected to be heroin.
