CCTV: The 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands recently opened in Wuhan, China and Geneva, Switzerland. President Xi Jinping attended and addressed the opening ceremony via video link. Could you share more information about it with us?
Zhao Lijian: On November 5, the opening ceremony of the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP14) opened in Wuhan under the theme of “Wetlands Action for People and Nature”. President Xi Jinping noted in his address that it is important that we build global consensus on prizing wetlands, advance the global process on wetlands conservation, enhance people’s well-being globally by leveraging the role of wetlands, and scale up wetlands action across the world.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of China joining the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. China is home to 13 of the 43 international wetland cities accredited under the Ramsar Convention, more than any other country in the world. China now boasts 56.35 million hectares of wetlands. With four percent of the world’s wetlands, China has met the diverse demands of one-fifth of the world’s population for wetlands. As Secretary-General of the Ramsar Convention Musonda Mumba said, China has shown strong leadership in wetland conservation; living up to its commitment, the Chinese government has increased input in wetland conservation, and demonstrated the importance it attaches...
