The fake websites 'misleading' real businesses - Newsroom

About 100 websites purporting to offer plumbing, electrical and pest control services have popped up in recent months, but they’re not real companies.

The websites all follow the similar URL formula of trade/service; location; then .co.nz – for example pestcontrolinvercargill.co.nz and pestcontrolnewplymouth.co.nz – and are a bid to get high Google search rankings and then cultivate customer leads on behalf of legitimate companies.

However, the websites themselves are pitched as legitimate companies containing local anecdotes and assurances about the quality of work provided.

“We’re the team at Pest Control Invercargill, your local experts in eliminating pesky intruders. With our vast knowledge and experience, we’ve got what it takes to tackle any pest problem,” reads the opening line on pestcontrolinvercargill.co.nz, for example.

The websites also have a contact enquiry form and phone number.

Barry Lloyd, who runs a legitimate pest control company in Northland (A1 Pest Control), was surprised when Newsroom called him to ask if he ran a company called Pest Control Northland.

The website pestcontrolnorthland.co.nz is near identical to the other websites created but for one small difference – his name is at the bottom of the page.

He said he was cold-called about three weeks ago by someone who told him they could get him more customer leads, which he was interested in and asked to be sent more information...
