Luxury SUV Manufacturer Gets a Lift from Its New Evoque

Earning accolades from the automotive press is nice, but it is sales that ultimately determine the success of a vehicle. The Range Rover Evoque just so happens to be delivering on both ends. In January, the Evoque was not only named 2012 North American Truck of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show, but Land Rover dealers saw a marked increase in sales, thanks in no small part to the sleek new compact SUV.

Land Rover’s January U.S. sales were up 41 percent compared to the same month in 2011, with 3,205 units finding new homes so far in the new year. While the Range Rover Evoque was helping to drive those sales, a panel of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada chose the stylish utility over finalists like the Honda CR-V and the BMW X3 for North American Truck of the Year.

“The Evoque is attracting a lot of positive attention from the automotive industry, but it’s more important that luxury-car buyers are sold as well,” said Dave Edwards, general manager of Greater Boston Land Rover dealership Land Rover Peabody. “The modern styling and smaller dimensions of the Evoque have broadened the appeal of the brand, and we’re seeing a lot of customers who haven’t previously shopped for a Range Rover.”

Though the Evoque has been grabbing the majority of Land Rover’s latest headlines, it is not the only model to have recently earned accolades. Last month, Winding Road magazine, a digital automotive publication, chose the 2012 Land Rover LR4 for its Best Cars of 2012 list, honoring the off-road stalwart with a win in the Big Utility category. With its mix of luxury and off-road ability, the LR4 is a cornerstone of the Land Rover lineup.

Winding Road editors praised the LR4’s ability to tackle formidable obstacles with its Terrain Response system that adjusts the driving style for mud, rocks, sleet and snow. Editors also noted the optional Camera Surround System, which allows drivers to observe the terrain all around the vehicle, a useful trick both in the woods and in the garage.

While it is designed for the roughest terrain on its exterior, the luxurious interior of the LR4 offers a welcome contrast. Clad with soft leather upholstery and the latest technology, life inside the LR4 has more in common with a luxury sedan than your average sport utility vehicle. Available with Straight Grain Walnut or Grand Black interior trim, the LR4 also features an available 17-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system and voice control for multiple devices.

“There are few vehicles that combine luxury and capability like the LR4 does; it’s a unique mix for sure,” Edwards noted. “The Evoque has proven to be extremely capable off road, but the LR4 offers a different experience for those that want to fully immerse themselves in the classic Land Rover experience.”
