Auto Researcher Praises Compact SUV’s Mix of Luxury and Rugged Capability

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque has won many awards for its edgy exterior styling, but it was the compact luxury SUV’s interior that recently caught the eyes of WardsAuto editors. The Evoque earned a spot on the 2012 Ward’s 10 Best Interiors list because of “no-nonsense” premium materials and a versatile design that make it worthy of a spot alongside the rest of the lineup at Range Rover dealerships.

WardsAuto editors sifted through 40 nominated vehicles with new or heavily revised interiors, judging each on ergonomics, material selection, safety, aesthetics and overall value. Each vehicle was also evaluated for their human-machine interface, a measure of how well information is conveyed to the driver. After review, WardsAuto found that the Range Rover Evoque took the tricky task of juggling ruggedness and luxury and made it seem easy.

“Capability doesn’t have to come at the expense of comfort, and the Evoque proves that while also introducing a new, elegant style,” said Adrienne Leader, general sales manager of Connecticut Range Rover dealership Land Rover Farmington Valley. “It can go well off the beaten path without any indication inside that you’re roughing it, which is why Connecticut drivers find it so appealing.”

Named the 2012 North American Truck of the Year, the Evoque represents a new direction for Land Rover, featuring a small-displacement engine and a compact wheelbase that makes it just as well suited for city adventures as it is for dirt roads. That urban appeal is also evident in the Evoque’s styling, which includes a raked back windshield, an aggressive front end with slanted headlights, and a crease down each flank that accentuates the vehicle’s long and low look.

Building on the compact SUV’s signature look, the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition made its debut last month at the Beijing Auto Show. A collaboration between Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern and pop-artist-turned-fashionista Victoria Beckham, the custom-made Evoque gets a number of understated updates both inside and out. No more than 200 units of the unique SUV will be produced, and only five are destined to reach the United States.

The exterior of the Evoque Special Edition features hand-finished matte-gray paint and gloss-black forged wheels, while rose-gold details tastefully break up the grayscale theme. Inside, semi-aniline Vintage Tan leather upholstery featuring ‘baseball’ stitching covers the seats, arm rests, door inserts and the central storage box lid. A nod to Beckham’s line of handbags, the Evoque Special Edition also comes with a custom four-piece luggage set made with some of the materials and colors used for the vehicle.

“The Evoque Special Edition really bridges the gap between the automotive and fashion worlds, creating a unique package with features typically reserved for exotic cars,” Leader noted. “That said, the Evoque is a head-turner in any guise, thanks to its bold concept-car proportions and modern styling.”
