Subaru’s Sedan Is Most Fuel-Efficient All-Wheel-Drive Vehicle in the United States

While the car market isn’t lacking a variety of green options these days, not too many of those options also feature all-wheel drive. Enter the 2012 Subaru Impreza, which was recently listed on RoadFly’s Ten Best Green Cars of 2012. The automotive review site’s list highlighted the most fuel-efficient new vehicles that also refuse to sacrifice driving dynamics, and the Impreza was the only all-wheel-drive non-luxury vehicle included.

RoadFly lauded the 2012 Impreza currently available at Subaru dealerships for delivering up to 36 mpg on the highway, the best fuel economy of any all-wheel-drive vehicle on sale in the United States. Declaring the Impreza a great city car available as a “hot hatch,” RoadFlyTV hosts Charlie Romero, Dan Carney and Emme Hall honored the capable Impreza on their list, along with more obvious green choices like the Toyota Prius c and the Honda Civic Natural Gas.

“The Impreza isn’t just a fuel-efficient car; it’s an all-weather warrior,” said Lonnie Poffenberger, Sales Manager of Gentile Subaru, a Racine, Wisconsin Subaru dealer. “Not every day can be a sunny one, and an all-wheel-drive Subaru like the Impreza eliminates the time you spend worrying about traction control in rain and snow. It’s a great alternative for people who want that peace of mind, but not the lowered fuel economy that comes with an SUV.”

In addition to fuel efficiency and driving dynamics, RoadFly’s Ten Best Green Cars of 2012 also factored in each vehicle’s overall environmental impact, and all candidates had to be new for the 2012 model year. The chosen vehicles varied widely in MSRP, segment and target market, ranging from the moderately priced to the luxurious. No SUVs appeared on this year’s list.

To achieve its award-winning fuel efficiency, the 2012 Subaru Impreza houses a 2.0-liter Boxer engine under the hood. Mating that 148-horsepower powerplant to a continuously variable transmission maximizes the Impreza’s fuel economy, but drivers can go with the standard five-speed manual gearbox for more control over the car’s ride. All-wheel drive is standard across all trims, meaning all Impreza owners have more control in inclement weather and on unpaved roads.

Subaru is also making it easier for their car shoppers to go green before they even get behind the wheel, thanks to its new Dynamic Brochure iPad apps. Available as an alternative to paper model brochures to help reduce waste, the digital platform is designed to improve the browsing experience in a personal way as well. Shoppers can access 360-degree views of the vehicle’s interior and exterior, hear and see Subaru’s Boxer engine at work in videos, and view comprehensive model specifications to configure their own vehicles down to paint color and interior trims.

“Subaru drivers are all about having fun outdoors in a responsible way, and they realize that everything we do has an environmental impact,” added Poffenberger. “Whether it’s creating more fuel-efficient engines, or developing an iPad app that reduces the amount of paper in our landfills, Subaru is working hard to protect the natural treasures that their customers love to drive to.”
