Porsche claims to currently have its freshest lineup ever in showrooms, and it appears that the new additions are resonating with U.S. buyers. Recently redesigned models like the 2013 Porsche 911 and 2013 Porsche Boxster remained popular last month, helping the luxury automaker boost its sales by 41 percent year-over-year for an October record. Year-to-date, Porsche sales are now up 13 percent compared to the same period in 2011, totaling 28,226 units.
The Porsche Cayenne was also instrumental in the automaker's record sales last month, selling 1,697 units for a 64-percent increase over October 2011. Two new models of the SUV, the high-performance Cayenne GTS and Cayenne Diesel, contributed to that strong performance. As the popularity of diesel drivetrains rises in the United States, Porsche expects the Cayenne Diesel's share of overall Cayenne sales to grow from 10 percent in its first year to between 15 and 20 percent in its second year.
"The Cayenne is the choice for luxury SUV buyers that don't want to be relegated to the slow lane just because they have family members and cargo to carry," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a New Hampshire Porsche dealer. "The new Cayenne GTS and Cayenne Diesel open up even more options when blending high performance and capability, whether it is the GTS' 420 horsepower or the diesel model's impressive torque and fuel economy."
On sale since September, the Porsche Cayenne Diesel borrows its 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 from the Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg, but the unit receives a power boost and comes paired with Porsche's signature handling. Generating 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, the SUV returns up to 29 mpg on the highway, yet it can still sprint from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds.
Luxury buyers that want even more of a thrill ride can look forward to the spring 2013 arrival of the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, which gains 50 horsepower and 37 pound-feet of torque over the existing Cayenne Turbo to reach 550 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. That impressive output allows the Turbo S model to jet from zero to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 175 mph.
The top-trim Cayenne Turbo S will come standard with the Sport Chrono package, which includes a lap timer in the center of the dashboard. Visually, the Turbo S will be distinguished from other Cayenne models with high-gloss black paint on the rearview mirror trim, front air intakes and inside surfaces of the 21-inch wheels, while dual twin-tube sport tailpipes add an aggressive touch to the exterior. Inside, two-tone leather upholstery in either Black and Carrera Red or Black and Luxor Beige create a sophisticated yet sporty cabin.
"Ever since Porsche entered the SUV market nearly a decade ago, it has been looking to push the boundaries of what can be accomplished in the segment, and the Cayenne Turbo S is its latest effort," added Bedell. "The vehicle has the goods to please the most passionate driving enthusiasts, but even families will want to take the long road home from soccer practice in the Turbo S."
