Luxury Sedan Takes a Leap Forward in Technology and Performance

By definition, an automaker's flagship model is supposed to showcase the very best of what its talented engineers and designers have to offer, but there may not be a more striking example than the upcoming 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is due to arrive at dealerships this September. From its position as the first car in history to be illuminated strictly with LED lights to its active perfuming system that keeps the cabin fresh, the next-generation S-Class was designed from dashboard to drivetrain with luxury top of mind.

It is not just the numerous innovative technologies that make the 2014 S-Class stand out, but also the ways in which they combine to create comfort and convenience. Industry-first heated armrests and a heated massage function coddle the driver, while the newly available Magic Body Control feature uses a stereo camera to identify bumps in the road ahead and adjusts the suspension for a smoother ride. That same camera now allows the Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control to work even during stop-and-go traffic, and it can also be used to automatically keep drivers in their lanes.

"When Mercedes-Benz comes out with a new version of its flagship sedan, it not only raises the bar for the rest of its lineup, but for the entire auto industry," said Will Dame, general manager of Viti, Inc., a Rhode Island Mercedes-Benz dealer. "The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class may be considered the biggest leap forward yet after customers factor in its mind-blowing technology, its faster and more efficient performance, and its engaging style."

Housing a 4.7-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class churns out 455 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. That impressive output allows the sedan to sprint from zero to 60 mph in a manufacturer-estimated 4.8 seconds, cutting 0.6 seconds from the time of current S-Class. Meanwhile, the 2014 model has a lower drag coefficient than the 2012 Toyota Prius, likely increasing the number of miles that drivers will get between fill-ups at the gas station.

Outside, Mercedes-Benz has integrated more coupe-like styling into the 2014 S-Class, adding headlights that are more contoured, a grille that is larger and more upright, and prominent wheel arches. The coupe design cues extend to the rear, with the rounded upper edges of the back windshield leading down to a horizontal chrome strip that sits above the LED-illuminated license-plate area.

"The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is marked by sophistication inside and out, but while the cabin was designed to create an unmatched sense of serenity, the exterior was shaped to make a head-turning statement on the road," Dame added. "The result is a complete luxury driving experience, and we can't wait to see our customers' reactions when the new models start arriving this fall."
