Redesigned for the 2014 model year to be even more capable and fuel efficient, the Subaru Forester earned its best-ever monthly sales in August. Lifted by the performance of its compact SUV, Subaru's overall sales followed suit, rising 45 percent year-over-year to reach a record mark of 28,293 units last month. Meanwhile, more than 13,000 Forester models found new homes, resulting in an impressive 89 percent increase compared to August 2012.

Year-to-date, Subaru has now moved 217,780 units for a 29 percent jump compared to the same period last year, with sales of the Forester rising 46 percent during that time. The 2014 Subaru Forester went on sale in March with a new standard six-speed manual transmission and an optional Lineartronic CVT that allows 2.5i models to return 32 mpg on the highway, the most of any all-wheel-drive compact SUV. Top-trim CVT-equipped models also feature improved all-conditions prowess with the new X-Mode control for the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Hill Descent Control.

"We saw a lot of buyers thinking ahead to the colder months as summer started to wind down in August, and the new Forester can tackle the snow and ice without costing drivers extra at the gas pump," said Chris Dunn, general sales manager of Mastria Subaru, a Greater Boston Subaru dealer. "That quality is true of so many models in Subaru's lineup, including the Impreza sedan and hatchback, which also saw record August sales."

With 6,784 units sold last month, the Impreza's best-ever August represented a 44 percent rise year-over-year. The 2013 Subaru Impreza comes standard with all-wheel drive, yet it is rated at an impressive 36 mpg on the highway. For buyers seeking added capability, the new Subaru XV Crosstrek is based on the Impreza hatchback but features a higher ground clearance of 8.7 inches and rugged body cladding. The compact crossover has quickly become a fixture of the Subaru lineup following its launch last fall, moving 4,757 units last month.

While Subaru's efficient all-wheel-drive capability remains highly appealing to buyers, the brand's only rear-wheel-drive model, the BRZ sports car, continues to draw in value-focused driving enthusiasts to dealerships. The Subaru BRZ sold 868 units in August, a 39 percent increase over the same month last year. For the 2014 model year, the BRZ will offer new Aha infotainment smartphone integration with its standard navigation system.

"Subaru is seeing such incredible sales because it has not only been constantly improving its popular models, but also creating new vehicles that fill gaps in the market," added Dunn. "The XV Crosstrek serves as a capable compact option as drivers continue to downsize their rides, while the BRZ handles as well as sports cars that cost two or three times as much."
