The Jeep Wrangler is constantly being shown in customized guises, but one such model caused such a stir at last year's Beijing International Automotive Exposition that Jeep has decided to place it into a special-edition production run. Arriving at dealers this fall, the 2014 Jeep Wrangler Dragon Edition nods to Chinese mythology inside and out, donning dragon decals and Black and Bronze Satin Gloss treatments.
Using the Jeep Wrangler Sahara as a base, the black Wrangler Dragon Edition wears a Dark Charcoal dragon decal that stretches from the hood to the driver's side of the vehicle, as well as a second dragon decal on the black spare tire cover in the rear. Meanwhile, Bronze Satin Gloss accents on the grille slats, headlamp surrounds and Jeep badges help to create an air of royalty. The dragon-inspired black-and-bronze theme carries over to the interior, with bronze bound floor mats, a dragon graphic overlay in the gauge cluster and a Satin Bronze Dragon Scale on the outer bolsters of the heated black Nappa leather seats.
"The Dragon Edition gives discerning Wrangler buyers a way to stand out from fellow owners with its upscale and somewhat mysterious design," said Brian Duval, general manager of Concord, New Hampshire Jeep dealership Bob Mariano Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. "Though fans of Chinese folklore will be particularly attracted to the special-edition model, you don't have to be a dragon expert to appreciate the sophisticated-yet-stealthy styling and go-anywhere capability."
For drivers who prefer regular production vehicles, Jeep has added upgrades to its Wrangler lineup for the 2014 model year. A newly available Trail Kit contains two D-rings, a tow strap and gloves, while the Wrangler's park lamps and turn-signal indicators are now clear instead of amber. Additionally, Sport models are now available with a Uconnect 6.5-inch touchscreen radio with hard-drive storage and SiriusXM Radio, as well as optional 32-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires on semi-gloss black 17-inch Rubicon aluminum wheels.
The Jeep Wrangler remains very popular at dealerships, with the iconic utility vehicle recording its best-ever August sales last month. Moving 15,825 units in the United States, the Wrangler experienced a 19 percent sales increase in August compared to the same month last year. Year-to-date, nearly 108,000 Wranglers have found new homes, resulting in a 12 percent rise over the same time period in 2012.
"In the past few years, the Wrangler has received both an award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and a redesigned interior, and Jeep keeps on refining the vehicle, so it continues to set new sales records," Duval added. "The modern Jeep Wrangler is as rugged and capable as ever on the outside, but it is now more comfortable, convenient and fuel efficient. Those qualities have helped the model expand its appeal to a broader group of drivers."
