Honda Accord Hybrid a Best Car to Buy 2014 Nominee

It has been seven years since Honda came out with a new Accord Hybrid, but if Green Car Reports magazine's opinion of the vehicle is any indication, the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is worth the wait. Green Car Reports nominated the new Accord Hybrid as one of the five finalists for the Best Car to Buy 2014 award, which evaluates which new model-year vehicles are optimal for consumers and have the potential to produce a positive effect on the environment. The award considers everything from gas mileage to price, since the more mass-market availability a vehicle has, the more likely it is to have a substantial impact.

While a hybrid in name, Honda used an unconventional technique to achieve an EPA-estimated 50 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway with the 2014 Accord Hybrid: eliminating the transmission. Instead, the electric motor powers the sedan during low speeds of operation, which means the Accord Hybrid doesn't require gasoline to function until it's operating at higher speeds.

"The Camry Hybrid may generate slightly more horsepower, but the 2014 Accord Hybrid has it beat everywhere else," said Gordon Riddle, general manager of Brown's Arlington Honda, a Virginia Honda dealership. "Take everything you love about the standard gas-powered Honda Accord, combine it with fuel efficiency to save you money, and it really is a no-brainer for Virginia car buyers."

Honda is hoping that the 2014 Accord Hybrid, which went on sale in the U.S. on Halloween, will continue to boost numbers for the Accord. The Honda Accord has been America's best-selling retail model with more than 300,000 sales to date and experienced an 11.2 percent year-over-year increase through October.
