Last year, the redesigned 2013 Ram 1500 earned Motor Trend's Truck of the Year award, with the magazine praising its innovative additions to the pickup segment like an optional air suspension and a TorqueFlite 8 eight-speed automatic transmission. For the 2014 model year, the Ram 1500 is set to become the only half-ton pickup truck to offer a diesel engine, and Motor Trend was so impressed with the powerplant that it has announced its first-ever repeat Truck of the Year winner.

Motor Trend put nine contenders through extensive testing for its 2014 Truck of the Year award, including the completely redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra. In addition to acceleration tests with and without a trailer, each truck's braking, cornering and real-world road manners were evaluated. Before voting on a winner, Motor Trend editors compared the test results against the award's criteria, which included Engineering Excellence, Efficiency, Design Advancement, Value, Safety and Performance of Intended Function.

"Motor Trend's editors had already discovered last year that the Ram 1500 is best-in-class in virtually every category, but the addition of the EcoDiesel V6 gave them reason to test the truck for their award again this year," said Richard Gill, owner of Brigham-Gill Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, a Natick, Massachusetts Ram dealership. "What they found is that the EcoDiesel is truly a game-changer in the half-ton pickup segment, thanks to its incredible real-world fuel economy that comes along with a huge amount of torque."

In order to evaluate gas mileage under conditions a typical truck owner would experience, Motor Trend applied its proprietary Intellichoice Real MPG fuel-economy testing. Using advanced technology to measure exhaust samples every second during an 88-mile drive, testers found that the Ram 1500 with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 bested all gas-powered half-ton trucks in fuel economy, returning up to 28 mpg on the highway. Despite that impressive efficiency, the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will produce 420 pound-feet of torque and a towing capacity of up to 9,200 pounds when it goes on sale in early 2014.
