For the 2014 model year, Porsche completely redesigned its Cayman sports car to be lighter, faster, more powerful and more fuel efficient, with its updated engines playing significant roles. In fact, the 2.7-liter flat-six-cylinder powerplant in the base 2014 Porsche Cayman was recently named to the 2014 Ward's 10 Best Engines list after performing well above its already impressive specs.

WardsAuto tested 44 powertrains for its 10 Best Engines list this year, judging each one on power, observed fuel economy, technology, torque, relative competitiveness and its noise, vibration and harshness characteristics. Editors required engines to be either all-new, significantly updated or a winner from last year, while all test vehicles needed to cost $60,000 or less and be on sale by the first quarter of 2014. Praising the Cayman's 2.7-liter flat-six for both its aggressive demeanor and its surprising fuel efficiency during rigorous testing, WardsAuto named a Porsche powerplant to its 10 Best Engines list for the fourth time.

"Porsche's ability to do more with less in its 2.7-liter flat-six has made the new Cayman better in all aspects of performance, whether you're looking at acceleration, power or fuel efficiency," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a Porsche dealer in New Hampshire. "The engine is a perfect complement to the third-generation Cayman's lighter body and more responsive chassis."

Though the 2014 Porsche Cayman's base engine has dropped its displacement by 0.2 liters compared to its predecessor, the unit produces 275 horsepower at 7,400 rpm, boosts of 10 horsepower and 200 rpm over the 2013 model. At the same time, Porsche has improved fuel economy by incorporating technologies like direct injection, auto start-stop, thermal management and electrical-system recuperation. With an optional seven-speed PDK transmission that reduces fuel consumption while coasting, the 2014 Cayman can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds but still return up to 32 mpg on the highway.
