With its distinctive roof bar, movable front roof section and wraparound rear window, the classic 1965 Porsche 911 Targa was designed to give its owners an engaging open-air driving experience in a sleeker, safer and more stable package. That concept has been taken into the future in the all-new 2014 Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S, which debuted at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month with an advanced automatic roof system that incorporates the original Targa styling cues.

At the touch of a button, the new 911 Targa's front roof section lifts up and arches toward the rear of the car while the wraparound rear window is also elevated, allowing the roof section to slide underneath it before it glides back into place. Top Speed has also reported that the brushed-aluminum roof bar on the 2014 Porsche 911 Targa models has been fortified for improved rollover protection, while a laminated safety glass is used for the rear window. For a quieter cabin, the front roof section features a sound-insulating panel that also keeps warmer air inside when the weather gets cold.

"The intricate design of the automatic roof on the new 911 Targa is almost as impressive as the performance of the car itself," said Larry Bedell, general manager of Porsche of Nashua, a Porsche dealer in New Hampshire. "It was engineered with an ideal mix of form and function that will allow drivers to enjoy the sun in style while still having peace of mind when it comes to safety and structural integrity."

Despite the retro design touches above their beltlines, the 2014 Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S largely follow the modern styling of the current 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet and 4S Cabriolet, and they will offer the same powertrains when they go on sale this summer. The 2014 Porsche 911 Targa 4 is equipped with a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 350 horsepower, enabling the sports car to race from 0 to 60 mph in as fast as 4.6 seconds. An upgrade to the 3.8-liter six-cylinder in the 911 Targa 4S can improve that time to 4.2 seconds with the 400 horsepower on tap.
